This past summer I had the pleasure of going to my first Twitter Math Camp. As it turns out becoming a participant at TMC is quite the feat. It regularly fills up quickly. And one way that you can get a spot is to be one of the presenters. They are always looking for new presenters and one of them could be you. And to help convince you I suggest you read recent blog posts from @samjshah or @marybourassa. They are great places to start if you are thinking of presenting but need a push or some ideas. And then when you are ready, fill in the Google form to submit your proposal.

I have seen this Shell Centre activity before but I really like this Desmos update from @pejorgens. It's a great way to start kids on interpreting points on a scatter plot. Thanks to @mrOrr_Geek for pointing this one out.

I like this problem that @FawnpNguyen highlighted on her blog recently:
There are 75 olives, 40% of which are green. I eat some of the green olives until 10% of the olives that remain are green. How many green olives did I eat?

Math Links for Week Ending Dec. 1st, 2017

In his latest post @MrOrrGeek peels back the curtain a bit to tell us about two things: "Igniting his moves" with, among other things,references to " The Five Practices of Productive Mathematics Discussion" and "Fuel Sense Making" where he talks about how to roll with what students do. And he does it all with a nice simple microwave context.

Although this post is a year old, I just saw it for the first time this week. Here @Anniekperkins takes the idea that mathematicians aren't just white dudes to new heights. She drops the following challenge: "Take 10-15 minutes a week to research (read Wikipedia, that’s all you need) a not-old-dead-white-dude mathematician, and then take 5 minutes in class to tell your students about them. " And then she's done most of the work for you. We have been creating these continuums of math problems on different topics at different grade levels. We have found that students actually really like working on them as practice. We have literally heard them say "Am I sick? Because I think this is fun". In this case, the topic is solving rational equations and inequalities.

With Christmas coming up, why not do some math with a fun survey about the best dancers in the Charlie Brown Christmas Special. But beyond that I think you could have kids do the calculations on all the different possible pairings there could be in the matchups to connect to combinatorics.

In a recent podcast from More or Less they look at the possible reason that albums are getting longer. The short answer is - more tracks means more potential clicks and higher chart placing. There is some interesting info about Spotify. I'm thinking you could have some conversations about rate using the information here about things like how many clicks is equated to one "purchase" - 1500 plays equates to one record sale.  On the Podcast, My Favourite Theorem they interview mathematicians and ask what their favourite theorem is. Though the theorems are not always k-12 centric, on this recent episode you find out how this mathematician connects Pythagorean Theorem with his Navajo identity.

Math Links for Week Ending Nov. 24, 2017

When teachers create activities to share, that's where the Internet is great. I have said that a few times on this blog and I especially like when those activities are for senior math courses. Sometimes we forget that senior students need to have activities too. In this activity, @MaryBourassa has done the leg work for creating logarithmic functions by creating cards of several functions. That's the hard work. The easy bit is giving each function to groups of students and having them determine their function's equation.

An interesting post from @ddmeyer which is essentially a call to arms in revamping the curriculum. The idea is that currently its designed with very few in mind:
"And just as the economic 1% creates systems that preserve its status – policies like the mortgage interest deduction for homeowners, discriminatory lending policies, and lower taxes on capital gains than income – through our action or inaction we create systems that preserve our status as the knowers and doers of mathematics."

Math Links for Week Ending Nov. 17th, 2017

As some of you know, Desmos now does Geometry now. That's great but my preferred mode of operation with Desmos is Activity Builder. I guess that is in the works and I got some advanced access to a beta version. So this is my first Geometry activity. It's an investigation into properties of Quadrilaterals (by looking at diagonals). It walks students through some of the properties and then lets them summarize with a table. In the end, they get some randomly generated practice to test their skills. Keep in mind it's in Beta so there may be times when it doesn't work right now. Last week when I was in Ottawa seeing @PGLiljedahl and the topic of student's taking notes came up. I was sitting next to @Wheeler_Laura and she was talking about her Course Packs that she uses for student notes. Each is about 10 pages long and each page covers one overall expectation. Student's use these to generate their notes for the three courses she has done already. And on a related note, check out her summary of the OAME Leadership conference.

Want to mix Pi and poems, why not have students write poems where the number of letters in each successive word matches the digits of Pi. This week was the OAME Leadership Conference in Ottawa and @PGLiljedahl was the keynote. It was great to hear about all of his research on how to build a thinking classroom first hand. There were a lot of points that he clarified about pulling it off. In the image here you can see a summary of the main things you need to do and the best practices for doing them (based on research). I tell a lot of teachers about Desmos Activity builder and sometimes it's hard to get the idea across. However, @JRuelbackh has created a really nice activity for teachers to go through as a student in order to see what features exist on Activity Builder. In this Desmos activity @MathyCathy asks: Is it Linear? Is it Parallel? Is it Perpendicular? all using card sorts. She also has a paper/pencil version. Either way this makes a nice consolidation activity for students.

I don't think this is a new problem but it was nice to be reminded of it by @mathforlove where he talks about it as a great way to get kids to step out of their comfort zone by taking chances with their guesses. The puzzle is the 2-4-6 puzzle where students have to guess the rule for those numbers.

This is a neat use for PowerPoint developed by @SteveWyborney. The premiss simple: You would like to have an image of some three dimensional shape made of cubes. Now you can take his slideshow template and just click on any one of the cubes and choose delete to remove it from all six images. Or right click on an cube to change its colour. This doesn't work for like a typical PPT. It is meant to give you a printable template but was created with PPT. In fact, each cube or piece of cube is actually made up of an entire cube you can move around. Download the slideshow and try it for yourself.
